“The light of my future is dimming.” These are the words that welcome us into BTS’ 2nd full album, Wings, and even though we love the boys here and would never doubt them… that statement is quite untrue. From the moment of their debut to the release of ’Wings’, the south Korean group had extended their fanbase and success by countless times. We know J-Hope’s words have a much deeper, metaphorical sense, though.
In the very intro of the album, sung by J-Hope, we are also met with the lines “The music box of tragedies echoes” and “I didn’t want to let go of the devil’s hands”, both of which give us a hint of the style we will find further into the songs. The melody also changes quite a bit from the previous mini albums’, assuming a more melancholic tempo.

The following song, ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’, is arguably the most famous of the album, and by no error of judgment. In this piece, the boys talk about love; a rather obsessed and poisoned love. The lover knows how the feeling hurts and is up to going through it all again for the injurer. The lyrics are deep, although repetitive, and we can all relate to the described mindset, either because we’ve been there or known someone who has.
And it’s no wonder why. Throughout the entire album -and I would risk saying, their entire discography-, BTS delivers #relatable lyrics that touch our hearts. With the solos that follow (Begin, by Jungkook; Lie, by Jimin; Stigma, by V; First Love, by Suga; Reflection, by RM; MAMA, by J-Hope and Awake, by Jin), we are given a glance at the boys’ souls, all of the lines touching a different trauma, referring to a different kind of hurting. We hear about the feeling of being lost in life and then ‘caught in a lie’; of a never healing wound and a first love that didn’t last long, and many other common emotions.

Those words are the beginning of ‘Reflection’, RM’s solo. It shows quite well how all of the seven knew the importance of making songs the fans could relate to and find some comfort in this relatability, for it can be hard to see yourself in celebrities full of seemingly never-ending glamour. ‘Wings’ is here exactly to break this stigma and give voice to the melancholy we all have inside of us, showing this in the form of beautiful songs and well-projected choreographies.
Of all, the most relatable song is probably the 10th title, ‘Lost”. The song discusses the difficulties of reaching adulthood and feeling, well, lost and pressures by so many possibilities and paths, but no rest.
The last five songs of the album are just as iconic, with ‘BTS Cypher pt.4’ receiving special highlights. In a bold letter to haters, the group's three rappers slay every argument an anti could possibly have against the band and its ARMY. Addressing not only the hate they get for their music but also because of the aesthetic pressure in the K-industry, this song truly is as iconic as it can get.

The amazing album comes to an end with ‘Interlude: Wings’, an outro just as good as all the other songs and which gives us a little taste of how good the next one might be. And it’s amazing, I must say.

‘You Never Walk Alone’ is an epilogue that brings an end to the ‘Wings’ album and the 3rd era of BTS’ discography. In this special compilation, we get to listen to all of the tracks cited above and four extra ones.
‘2! 3!’ proposes a cheerful epilogue, with lines such as “Erase all sad memories, hold my hand and smile” and “So thanks, For becoming my light, For becoming the flower in the most beautiful moment in life”. It really expresses a tad bit of the huge gratitude the boys, as a group and as individuals, hold for their fans.
Dedicating an entire song to this feeling of comfort; to the disposition of giving comfort as well as receiving, is not unlike BTS at all. In fact, their discography is full of these little speeches; little “thank you” moments that leave the fanbase high up among the clouds.

Now, ‘Spring Day’ is quite something. Referring to South Korea’s biggest marine tragedy, the sinking of the Sewol Ferry, this track has an immense meaning not only to the boys and all Koreans but also to the entire ARMY. In a touching melody and even more touching lyrics, we feel the pain and sorrow of a wounded nation with missing spots, missing souls. But the song is not dumping of sadness and hurt; just like every other sentimental song from the boys, it has that comforting feeling so characteristic of the group.

We can only thank BTS for bringing such bright light to difficult matters and letting us know that, as dim as the world has been, there’s still a good future to come and the spring may unfold over the winter, cultivating our flowers and healing our wounds.
‘Not Today’, on the other hand, has a much more hectic melody and a message to “all the underdogs in the world”:

The ending to the album and era, ‘A Supplementary Story: You Never Walk Alone’ makes justice to its title. Another song about how the listeners can count on BTS to be there and hold their hands when life gets hard, it is the best ending to an iconic period of the group’s history.
Now, let’s end this review with the last few lines of the entire album:
